• Orthodontics is dental speciality which focuses on the correction of misaligned teeth and improvement of jaw function.
Orthodontic treatment may be delivered through a range of orthodontic devices such as braces, plates, clear aligners or retainers. Devices can be removable or fixed depending on the type of correction that is required.
• Traditional orthodontics takes place when all of the adult teeth have erupted.
In many instances however, to help accommodate crowded areas, adult teeth may need to be removed prior to braces. Therefore some children may benefit from ‘early intervention orthodontics’.
• Early orthodontics typically involves slowly and comfortably expanding the jaw early to help increase space for future teeth.
This process can help make future correction needs easier, and in some cases may avoid the removal of adult teeth. At your child’s most recent dental consultation we may have mentioned the need for “orthodontics”.

EARLY INTERVENTION ORTHODONTICS
How could your child benefit from early orthodontics?

• Make room for future teeth!
Simplify the overall treatment process and attempt to avoid invasive treatment needs in the future, such as teeth removal or jaw surgery
• Create optimal space for the tongue
Ideal for patients who have a narrow palate and need improvement with tongue function (especially children going through or in need of orofacial myology therapy)
• Stabilise the top and bottom jaw into a harmonious relationship
For children who have overbites and underbites (protruding upper jaw or short lower jaw)
• Promotes better breathing
Altering the width of the upper jaw and palate can help influence the ability to breath through the nose
• Improve oral hygiene
Less crowding can help with effective tooth brushing and easy flossing, therefore reduce the risk of dental decay.

SPECIALIST ORTHODONTICS

• Orthodontists are highly skilled registered dental practitioners who have completed additional postgraduate training in orthodontics.
Orthodontists are specially trained to treat all ages, however some may take an interest in early intervention.
In complex cases, an orthodontist may work alongside an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon if complex surgical intervention is required.

DISCLAIMER FROM KIDDIES DENTAL CARE (KDC)
• The dental clinics listed within the QR code have no business relationship with KDC.
• They are clinics that we may share mutual patients with, who are undergoing early orthodontic treatment.
• We do not know if they have a waiting list and how long the wait may be.
• There will be many more clinics which may offer early orthodontic treatment, so you do not have to choose any clinics from this list.
• Some clinics, may suggest your child to return to KDC for tongue tie, lip tie, tongue thrust or Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder assessment and management.
• KDC OM specialist team would be able to assist or you can also choose other clinics to address these needs.
• Parents have the ultimate decision to proceed to assessment (and treatment) with these clinics or not.
• Parents have the right to seek further opinions from other specialists or dentists.
