Brushing – Support your child to learn to brush

Here at Kiddies Dental Care we get many questions about how parents can best support their children when first learning how to brush their teeth.
  • How long should you brush children’s teeth for?

    • Simply remember our 2×2 motto…brush for 2 mins twice a day.  Many families use a count down timer on a phone or ipad to show their child how long to brush for.
  • How many times a day should we be brushing?

    • Twice a day is essential for good oral health
  • Must toothpaste be used, and how much?

    • Children under 3 should use a small toothbrush with a very small amount of toothpaste…about a grain of rice
    • Children 3-6 are encouraged to use a pea size amount of toothpaste
    • Older children will use slightly more than that
    • Encourage your child to spit their toothpaste out
  • Do children need to floss?

    • Flossing once a day – at night before bed is best
  • How often should the toothbrush be replaced?

    • Every 3-4 months or when the bristles are worn out or your child has been sick
  • How should teeth be brushed?

    • Help your child place the toothbrush at an angle against their gums
    • Move the brush back and forth, gently, in short strokes
    • Brush the front, back, and top of teeth
    • And don’t forget to brush the tongue to get rid of germs and freshen the breath
  • How long do I need to supervise or assist with teeth cleaning?

    • The assistance should be provided until the child is at least 8 years of age
  • When should our first dental check-up be?

    • First dental checkup should be no later than their second birthday.
Don’t forget the importance of a nutritious and well-balanced diet. Check out some of our other blogs that provide great advice on this.
